It’s Sunday. You’re feeling productive. Maybe you’ve got your coffee (or matcha), a load of laundry going, and every intention of getting your life together before Monday.

Then you open your closet.

It’s packed.

And somehow, you still have absolutely nothing to wear.

Sound familiar?

Before you decide you need an entirely new wardrobe, try a Sunday Closet Reset. It’s a simple routine that can help you rediscover what you already own, figure out what’s actually missing, and make getting dressed all week so much easier.

Bonus: you might even find a few things worth selling along the way.

Here are 10 things to do before declaring a full-blown wardrobe emergency.

1. Pull Out the Things You Never Wear

You know the pieces.

The jeans you’re definitely going to wear “someday.” The dress that has survived six closet cleanouts despite not leaving the hanger since 2022. The shirt you love in theory but somehow hate every time you put it on.

Pull them out.

You don’t necessarily have to get rid of everything today. The goal is simply to separate your actual wardrobe from your fantasy wardrobe.

If you continually skip over something, there’s probably a reason.

2. Make a Sell, Donate and Maybe Pile

Now comes the fun part.

Sort those neglected pieces into three categories:

Sell — desirable brands, vintage pieces, trendy styles and clothing in great condition.

Donate — good clothing that probably isn’t worth the time or effort to sell.

Maybe — because apparently we all need an emotional-support pile.

Put the “maybe” pieces somewhere separate. If you don’t think about them or reach for them over the next month, you probably have your answer.

And yes, as a longtime reseller, I absolutely believe your unwanted clothes could be someone else’s next favorite find.

3. Shop Your Own Closet

Before opening your favorite shopping app, shop the closet you already paid for.

Seriously.

Move things around. Pull pieces out of drawers. Look behind the jacket that has somehow swallowed half your closet.

You may be surprised by how many great pieces you’ve forgotten about.

Try pairing things differently, too. That blouse you always wear with jeans might look completely different tucked into a midi skirt. Throw a blazer over a basic T-shirt. Wear sneakers with the dress you normally save for going out.

Sometimes you don’t need new clothes.

You need new combinations.

4. Build Five Outfits for the Week

This one can completely change your Monday morning.

Pick five outfits and put them together now.

Not imaginary outfits, either.

Actually try them on.

Make sure everything fits. Make sure the shoes work. Make sure the pants don’t suddenly require a belt you haven’t seen since April.

Take a quick mirror photo of each outfit so you don’t have to remember what you created.

Congratulations. You just eliminated five potential “I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR!” moments.

5. Find Your Wardrobe MVPs

Look at the pieces you wear constantly.

Maybe it’s your favorite jeans, a black blazer, an oversized button-down, a great pair of sneakers or that one sweater you would probably wear four days a week if nobody noticed.

These pieces tell you something important about your personal style.

Instead of buying clothing for the person you imagine yourself being, start paying attention to the person you actually dress every morning.

Your most-worn pieces are giving you the blueprint.

6. Identify the Actual Gaps

Now — and only now — are we allowed to say we “need” something.

Maybe you realize you own six skirts but only one top you actually like with them.

Maybe your wardrobe is overflowing with statement pieces but you’re missing good basics.

Or maybe you have plenty of clothes but desperately need a versatile jacket.

Write those gaps down.

Suddenly “I need new clothes” becomes:

“I need a neutral cardigan.”

Much less dangerous.

7. Check What Needs a Little TLC

Sometimes we stop wearing something simply because it needs five minutes of attention.

Look for:

• Missing buttons
• Loose threads
• Wrinkles
• Minor stains
• Pilling
• Shoes that need cleaning
• Clothing waiting to be steamed

Create a small repair/refresh pile and deal with it.

That sweater you haven’t worn in months might suddenly feel brand new after five minutes with a fabric shaver.

8. Put Your Favorites Where You Can See Them

Closet real estate matters.

If the clothing you actually wear is buried behind special-occasion dresses and jackets you haven’t touched in three years, reorganize.

Put your everyday favorites front and center.

You can even rotate your wardrobe seasonally.

For fall, bring forward the sweaters, denim, jackets, boots and richer colors. Move the pieces you won’t be wearing for a while somewhere less prominent.

Out of sight, out of mind works both ways.

9. Make a “Do Not Buy” List

This might be even more useful than your shopping list.

Have 14 black tops?

You probably don’t need number 15.

Keep buying beautiful dresses even though your actual lifestyle is leggings, jeans and casual outfits?

We may have identified the problem.

Your Sunday reset should reveal the categories where you already have MORE than enough.

Knowing what you don’t need makes it much easier to avoid impulse purchases.

10. If There’s Still a Gap, Shop Secondhand First

Okay.

You’ve cleaned.

You’ve reorganized.

You’ve created outfits.

You’ve shopped your closet.

And you really are missing something.

Now you have permission to shop.

But before automatically buying new, look secondhand.

Resale is one of my favorite ways to find better-quality clothing, discontinued styles, vintage pieces, designer brands and completely unique items without wearing the exact same thing everyone else just ordered.

And, of course, I happen to know a pretty great place to start.

You never know what you’ll find — because the inventory is always changing.

Your Closet Doesn’t Need to Be Bigger. It Needs to Work Better.

The goal of a Sunday Closet Reset isn’t to create a perfectly organized Pinterest closet.

It’s to make Monday morning easier.

Your wardrobe should be filled with clothing that fits your body, your lifestyle and the way you actually like to dress.

And sometimes the solution to “I have nothing to wear” isn’t buying another five things.

It’s rediscovering the great things you already have.

So turn on some music, make your favorite Sunday drink, give yourself 20 or 30 minutes and go shopping in your own closet.

You might be surprised by what you find.

And if you discover a genuine wardrobe gap along the way?

Well… that’s what secondhand shopping is for. 😉
