Beach or mountains? Which do you prefer? Why?

If you grew up in San Diego, you already know the answer to the greatest debate of all time: beach or mountains? Sure, mountains are cute. They have pine trees, cozy cabins, and bears who may or may not judge your trail mix choices. But toes in the sand? The sun on your face? A November tan that confuses literally everyone else in the country? Nothing beats it — especially Thanksgiving in the sand, which is the most elite Southern California tradition we don’t talk about enough.

Here’s why the beach wins every time.

1. Sand Is Basically Nature’s Memory Foam Sinking your toes into warm sand is like letting Mother Nature give your feet a spa day. Meanwhile, mountains give you… rocks. Sharp ones. The kind that make you regret every cute hiking boot you ever bought.

2. Ocean Air > Mountain Air Mountain air is crisp and clean, sure — but beach air has salt, attitude, and the faint smell of sunscreen mixed with churros. It’s like aromatherapy for people who prefer good vibes over elevation.

3. Thanksgiving Tastes Better When You’re Wearing Flip-Flops Other states are out here defrosting turkeys in snowstorms while we’re grilling on the beach and trying to keep the wind from stealing our dinner rolls. Anyone who’s ever eaten pumpkin pie with sand blowing around knows the chaos + joy combo is unmatched.

4. Mountains Require Gear You want to enjoy the mountains? You need jackets, boots, gloves, and possibly an emergency plan involving bears. The beach requires a towel, sunglasses, and maybe a snack from 7-Eleven. It’s called balance.

5. The Ocean Gives Main Character Energy At the beach, the sun hits you just right. Your hair cooperates. The waves are dramatic in the background like you’re starring in your own indie film. In the mountains, the wind slaps you like it’s trying to reset your Wi-Fi.

6. Parking Is a Sport Either Way, But At Least the Beach Has Views Finding a spot near the sand is basically CrossFit for your patience, but at least when you get out of the car, you’re steps away from sunshine. Mountain parking lots? You hike before the hike.

7. Beach Days Are Spontaneous You can wake up, see the sun shining, and be on the beach in 20 minutes flat. Mountains require a whole itinerary, timed snacks, and someone who knows what chains for tires even are.

8. The Beach Is Therapy Without the Copay There’s something about sitting at the edge of the water, listening to the waves crash, and thinking, “Wow, everything is fine actually.” The mountains try to give you the same vibe, but it’s harder to relax when a squirrel is staring at your granola bar.

9. San Diego Pride Runs on Vitamin Sea When you grow up here, the beach isn’t just a place — it’s a personality trait. It’s your happy place, your comfort zone, your childhood, your unofficial therapist, and your Thanksgiving dining room.

10. You Can’t Beat That Sunset Mountains have sunsets. Sure. But the beach? The beach turns every evening into a free cinematic event. Pink skies, orange glow, maybe a dolphin cameo. Top that, pine trees.

So beach or mountains? For this San Diego girl, it will always be the sand, the surf, and those perfect SoCal sunsets. I’ll take salty toes over soggy socks any day — and if you need me this Thanksgiving, you know exactly where to find me: plate in hand, digging my feet into the warm sand like it’s the most natural holiday tradition in the world.
