Selling Surprise Products on Whatnot? 🎁 Before you dive in, it’s essential to understand the updated rules and guidelines to keep your selling experience fair, transparent, and compliant with Whatnot’s policies.
If you’re a reseller, collector, or Whatnot seller looking to offer mystery-style products, here’s a simple breakdown of what you need to know!
1. What Are Surprise Products?
Surprise Products (formerly known as Mystery Games) are items sold where buyers don’t know exactly what they’ll receive until after purchase. They can be sold in two formats:
✅ Single Surprise Product: A single item or bundle sold to one buyer. Example: A blind box, a mystery bundle, or a surprise pallet.
✅ Set of Surprise Products: A collection of mystery products distributed at random to multiple buyers.
💡 Not Included in This Policy:
- Card Breaks (These follow their own policy)
- Personal shopping & “Build-Your-Own-Box” offers (Buyers pick after purchasing)
- Single Surprise Products
2. Rules for Selling Single Surprise Products
If you’re selling a single mystery item or bundle, you CANNOT:
🚫 Advertise it as a prize game. You can’t claim that someone might get a super-rare item.
🚫 Use misleading descriptions. Buyers must know what type of item they’re getting (e.g., brand, condition, category).
💡 Example: “Bundle includes 3 vintage band tees, all in good condition, size L-XL.” ✅
3. Rules for Selling Surprise Sets (Multiple Buyers, Random Distribution)
If you’re selling a set of Surprise Products, these rules apply:
📌 Randomization & Visibility
🔹 No using physical machines (e.g., gumball, vending, or raffle machines) to distribute items.
🔹 Every item must be shown on-screen during the sale.
🔹 Buyers must be able to see all available items before purchasing.
📌 Detailed Item Checklist Required
In the listing description, sellers must provide a clear breakdown of all items in the Surprise Set, including:
✅ Brand/Manufacturer (or state if unbranded)
✅ Product Name/Title
✅ Condition (New, Fair, Good, etc.)
✅ Quantity (If more than one)
✅ Other details (e.g., graded cards, sealed packaging)
💡 Example:
- One Pink Brand Necklace, NWT
- One Blue Brand Necklace, Condition: Fair
- Two Pink Brand Necklaces, Condition: Fair
- Two Blue Brand Necklaces, Condition: Good
🚨 You can only sell as many listings as there are items available. No selling “extra spots” beyond your inventory.
4. Important Restrictions on Surprise Sets
🚫 No Prizes or Value Claims
- You cannot advertise a “big prize” in a Surprise Set.
- You cannot mention the floor, ceiling, or average value of the items in a set.
🔄 Same Product Type Only
Each Surprise Set must include only one type of product. No mixing different product categories.
🚫 Examples of Rule Violations:
❌ A Set that includes both sports cards & autographed photos.
❌ A Set with both sneakers & streetwear.
❌ A Set with both plush toys & dolls.
✅ Correct Examples:
✔ A Set that contains only trading cards of the same brand.
✔ A Set that contains only beauty products of the same type (all lipsticks, all blushes, etc.).
✔ A Set that contains only fashion items of the same category (all tops, all bottoms, etc.).
5. Minimum Value Requirements
Some product categories must meet minimum value thresholds for each item in a Surprise Set:
💼 Bags & Accessories: $150 for bags, $50 for accessories
👟 Sneakers & Streetwear: $50 minimum
🏀 Sports Memorabilia: $35 minimum
💡 If you want to sell Surprise Products in Bags & Accessories or Sneakers & Streetwear, you must get prior approval from Whatnot.
6. Final Thoughts: Follow the Rules & Sell with Confidence!
Whatnot’s Surprise Product policy is designed to keep the marketplace fair and fun for buyers and sellers alike. If you’re unsure whether your show or items comply, it’s best to play it safe.
